Gombe Spends N20bn on Education (Are you kidding me?)

Dankwambo

Gombe - Gov. Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe state, on Monday said the state government spent over N20 billion on education in the last four years.

Dankwambo made this known in Gombe while receiving the Vice Chancellor of University of Maiduguri, Prof. Abubakar Njodi, who visited him at the Government House.

He said that the amount was spent on construction of schools, renovation of existing structures, and procurement of books.

He disclosed that no fewer than 3,000 graduates were recruited to teach in schools in the state to enhance teachers’ capacity.

Dankwambo stated that school curricula in the state had been reviewed and that contracts were entered into with a publishing company for the supply of text books.

He, however, lamented that in spite of the government’s commitment to the sector, school enrollment in the Northern part of the state was still low.

“Now we are thinking of introducing feeding in day schools and introduction of other incentives to attract the pupils and their parents,’’ he said.

The governor solicited the support of the university in areas of collaboration that would be of benefit to the state and its citizens.

Earlier, Njodi, who is an indigene of Gombe, thanked the governor for the support to the university and for re-positioning education in the state by giving it priority.

He assured of the university’s readiness to partner the state in developing education.

“Do not hesitate to contact us whenever our support is needed; we are ready to assist any time,’’ Njodi said.
