A few years ago, I was with a group of Popeyes assistant restaurant managers and I asked them, “what happens when one of your friends gets promoted to restaurant manager? Does anything change?”

When WAEC was WAEC: Back in the days

Yet again, Nigerian students fare poorly in WAEC examination.  It’s time to go back to the basics

Only 38.68 per cent of the 1.593 million students, who sat the 2015 West African Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE), passed with credits in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics.  That is another sobering reminder of the deep-rooted nature of the educational challenges currently facing Nigeria.

UNILAG rape saga: No one Testified Against Lecturer

Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU),  University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter, Dr Adelaja Adekoya said yesterday that nobody came forward to testify against the alleged rapist lecturer, Akin Baruwa, when the school set up a panel to investigate the matter.
Adekoya, while speaking with Daily Trust, said it is not true that the institution refused to investigate a petition allegedly written by another victim against Baruwa.
According Adekoya,  the varsity’s Vice Chancellor has a reputation and will not have cover up such a case.
He said when the panel was constituted, nobody came forward to testify against the lecturer and as such the institution could not be accused of complicity.
“The vice chancellor we have here is a credible man. He does not condone unethical conducts. If a complaint is filed against any lecturer, I can tell you that there is nobody that can intervene at that level. What we know is that when the panel was constituted based on the alleged victim’s complaint, nobody came forward to testify against the man and as such the case died a natural death. Even in a law court, you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Although, I sympathise with the complainant, the case must be proved,” Adekoya said.
Baruwa, a supposed lecturer/project supervisor with UNILAG was alleged to have raped an 18-year-old admission seeker in his office a few weeks ago. The development attracted a lot of interest and the university disowned the lecturer.
The UNILAG ASUU chairman said Baruwa is not a member of the academic union. He also said the management and ASUU set up separate panels.
On why the school and union will investigate someone who is neither on the payroll nor a member of ASUU, Adekoya said the management is aware of the fact that the supposed incidence took place within the varsity’s property and as such there was a need to find out “insider collaborators who could have made such facilities available to him”.
The ASUU chairman said the management and union will ensure that anyone found culpable in the incident is punished.S

SSCE EXAM: 61 Percent Failure in English & Maths

What in Gods name is happening to our Education Sector? Is it that this exam questions are too tough for students?

Though the 2015 results from the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE), conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), are a slight improvement on the ones from last year's, they are still nothing to write home about.

The Head of Nigerian Office, WAEC, Mr Charles Eguridu, who announced the 2015 results at his Yaba Office, said: "Out of 1,593,442 candidates who sat for the examinations, only 616,370 candidates, representing 38.68%, obtained credits in five subjects and above including English Language and Mathematics."

Speaking on the slight improvement in the results from previous years, Eguridu said that in 2014, 529,425, representing 31.28 per cent, obtained five credits in English and Mathematics while, in 2013, total candidates who obtained five credits in English and Mathematics were 639,760, representing 38.30 per cent.

Getting 38% in any examination is nothing to be reckoned with in any part of the world. In fact, such a result means automatic repeat for any student at any level of examination.

The failure of most of the students in the 2015 exams must have further impoverished parents who went through thick and thin to register their wards, buying registration cards, result check cards and all sorts of cards that now characterise examinations in our education sector, but enriched the government and the communication sector players.

How Kwara Polythecnic Denied their Own Students

The authorities of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, on Tuesday disowned suspected cult members involved in Saturday’s bloody clashes in some parts of the metropolis.

The Deputy Rector (Administration) of the polytechnic, Mr Ahmed Aminu, who addressed a news conference in Ilorin, was reacting to media reports that 13 students of the institution died during bloody clashes involving rival cult groups in Ilorin.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the police had arrested 14 suspected cult members over their involvement in the clashes while two persons were confirmed dead.

Aminu said the polytechnic completed its examinations for the 2014/2015 academic session on Aug. 8, and had ordered students to vacate the campus on the same day.

He added that screening for the 2015/2016 Students Union election, which was believed to have triggered the bloody clashes, ended peacefully with security agents in attendance as observers.

“There was no cult clash in Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The students finished their examinations for the 2014/2015 academic session on Aug. 8, 2015 without any hitches.

“Circulars were issued to that effect and students had vacated the campus.

“The 2015/2016 Students Union election screening exercise was successful.

“It was witnessed by operatives of security agencies like the State Security Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the police, with a copy of the result given them,” Aminu said.

Aminu also said the only academic activity on the campus presently was the conference marking of examination scripts.

He appealed to residents of the state not to panic following the media reports, saying the institution had ended its academic session before the incident. (NAN)

How The Yorubas Can Deal With The Igbos

For decades, the Igbo and the Yoruba have lived in peace but have bickered ceaselessly like cat and dog. On April 22, 2014, I wrote an article entitled, “‘Tom and Jerry’ relationship between Igbo and Yoruba to highlight the inherent strengths of these two ethnic groups and how they can positively direct these strengths for the good of the two ethnic groups and Nigeria in general. I added another article on April 21, 2015, entitled, “Lagos is not a ‘No man’s land’ but to underpin how the two ethnic groups can work together.

However, one complaint some Yoruba have against the Igbo is that the latter are limiting the opportunities available to the Yoruba by being in control of their homeland in the South-East and also sharing the opportunities in the South-West with the Yoruba. If the Igbo were all resident in the South-East, and only come into the South-West to transact business and go back, some maintain, there would not be much problem. But the idea of the Igbo settling en masse in Yorubaland, especially Lagos, buying property massively, controlling some markets and products, and having a say in the politics of the South-West seem threatening to some Yoruba.

It creates the impression that the Igbo usually hold an annual general assembly in a 30-million-man capacity stadium at which a directive is issued to every Igbo person to go to the South-West and take it over. But as has been shown, the Igbo are investment-driven, and land seems to be the best investment in Nigeria, because of its ever appreciating value and the protection it gives to the owner from landlords who talk down on tenants, increase rent at will and eject tenants at the flimsiest reason. The Igbo are proud people who don’t like living at the mercy of any “master”.

One weird alternative is to send all Igbo out of Yorubaland. But that option is not an option because the Igbo are Nigerians and have a right to reside in any part of Nigeria without any passport or residential permit. Secondly, even if the Igbo and the Yoruba don’t belong to the same country, the global standard is that people are free to reside in any country once they have valid papers, and they have a right to own property once they can afford it. Currently, Nigerians reside in all parts of the world and own property there without being citizens of those countries.

However, there is an option that will balance the skewed equation between the Igbo and the Yoruba and reduce the tension between the two ethnic groups. That option is to have a strategic migration of the Yoruba in droves into Igboland, residing there with their families, transacting business, buying property and participating in the local politics and social activities in Igboland. Currently, many Yoruba seem to be averse to living in other parts of Nigeria outside the Yoruba enclave. Interestingly, they love to live in large numbers in the UK and the US.

Even in the choice of university, it is the same story. The PUNCH edition of August 10, 2015 published a news story on page 6 on the result of the post-UTME examination released by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. The person with the highest score was Igbo (Onyenachi Nze). Two people tied at third position, and one of them was Igbo (Jude Epunam). If you check the results released by universities which are based in the South-East, Yoruba names will be few and far between, not because they don’t want to admit Yoruba students, but because they rarely apply to South-East universities or even those in the South-South. In my class of about 70 students at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, we had only one Yoruba student.

Once the Yoruba take a decision to “invade” the South-East in large numbers, the relationship between them and the Igbo will improve greatly. They will stop feeling short-changed by the Igbo. While an Emeka is buying a house in Okota, an Ayodele should be buying a house beside Emeka’s ancestral home in Amawbia. While a Dozie is calling himself Eze-Igbo of Ojo, a Dayo is calling himself Oba Yoruba of Ngwaland.

That was why I was very happy when Ekiti State mooted the idea of sending some Ekiti youths to Onitsha and Aba to acquire trading skills and craftsmanship. We Nigerians love to see the bad sides of each ethnic group rather than the good sides. Each ethnic group has some great qualities that anybody who is not enslaved by tribal supremacy and hate can copy and put to good use. My 21-year sojourn in Yorubaland has added some value to me.

In all parts of the world, settlers always have an edge to succeed more than the indigenes. Why? Settlers come with different perspectives. They naturally think outside the box. They see things differently and therefore spot opportunities that indigenes can’t spot. They have more drive to succeed. While sons of the soil live in their own houses and pay no rent, and have access to farmlands where they can get food for free, etc, which make them complacent and conceited, settlers know they have to succeed or die of hunger or get booted out by their landlords. They are also not bogged down by their culture or positions. A prince in a foreign land will pocket his title and do even menial jobs to succeed, but he can’t do the same in his own land.

While growing up in Nnewi in the South-East in the late 70s and early 80s, I saw hired farm workers from Enugu and Ebonyi send their Nnewi counterparts out of business. They came in with hoes whose blades were three times the size of the hoes used by Nnewi farmers. So, they worked faster. And unlike the Nnewi hired workers for whom you must provide one meal plus wine per day until they finished working for you, the Enugu/Ebonyi workers demanded no such thing. They got the job done fast, get paid, and move on to another job. Soon, nobody was hiring the Nnewi workers, and they fizzled out.

Ghanaian tailors, barbers, cobblers, etc, did the same thing to their Nnewi counterparts when they came into the town in the late 70s and early 80s.

The bottom line is that people who want to pay for goods and services want new, better, faster and more cost-effective ways of offering them. They don’t care about your race or religion or nationality. That is why settlers have an edge over indigenes.

So for the Yoruba involved in house construction, architecture, roofing, tiling, wiring, plumbing, auto mechanics, panel-beating/car-painting, house-painting, fashion designing, herbal medicine, hairdressing, nail-fixing, upholstery, restaurants/bars, etc, it may be time to seek a new territory. Igboland needs your fresh perspectives and artistry.

In China, Chinese food would seem ordinary, but in Africa, Europe or America, it is exotic. The same thing goes for something as ordinary as roast plantain (boli) or specially prepared goat meat called asun. Because these are Yoruba meals, if prepared in the South-East by a Yoruba person, they are seen as exotic delicacies.

When there is an influx of Yoruba into Igboland, it will create more competition there. Variety will be added to the lifestyle in Igbo land. A win-win situation will be created. The Igbo will no longer feel that they are being foolish by investing in Yoruba land without the Yoruba reciprocating.

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe with Dim Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu and Chief Obafemi Awolowo could not unite the Igbo and Yoruba. On the contrary, they created a deeper gulf between the two ethnic groups. The absence of regional governments has created an absence of central figures in Yorubaland and Igboland that can champion an honest and enduring Igbo-Yoruba relationship. A real handshake across the Niger is therefore essential now more than ever before.

GREAT LOSE: OAU Students Pay Tribute to Late Oni of Ife

Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade SijuwadeScores of Senior Lecturers and Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun, have eulogised the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade.

Some of them, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the ancient town of Ile-Ife on Saturday, described the late monarch as a an architect of peace, harmony and equality.

The Dean of Faculty of Arts, Prof. Femi Adewole said the late monarch was an epitome of humility, man of valour, and a passionate custodian of Yoruba tradition.

He described him as an elephant whose might and influence went beyond the shore of Nigeria.

Adewole, however, prayed to God to grant the immediate family of the Ooni the fortitudes to bear the irreparable loss.

In the same vein, Dr Sola Ajibade, the Head of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, eulogised the late monarch and prayed for the repose of his soul.

He said since death was inevitable, the only way to make indelible landmark was through committed service to humanity, which the late Ooni perfectly fulfilled.

Meanwhile, some students of the institution had expressed deep shock over the death of Oba Sijuwade, and described him as a father of all.

A part two student in the Faculty of Law, Miss Deborah Ishola, said series of intervention of Ooni in the labour crisis in the school qualified him as a father and peace advocate.

Also, Mr Alabi Arogbofa, a students’ activist on campus, prayed for a passionate and committed successor for the late monarch.

“Since the power of life resides with the Most High God, we can only pray to God for a father and committed king like the late monarch to succeed him.

“And to continue the good work of the late royal father, indeed, Ife, Nigeria, and the entire black race have lost a rare African leader.

“Ooni is a colourful custodian of black heritage, and an unrepentant ambassador of African culture,” he said. (NAN)

See the 11 Fake Private Universities in Nigeria

The National Universities Commission, NUC, on Thursday denied 11 private universities operating in Nigeria full operational licenses for their inability to meet set standards three years after they were issued provisional licenses.

Speaking at the presentation of the full operational licenses to nine other private universities, the NUC Executive Secretary, Julius Okojie, said the 11 affected private universities were given two years to get their full operational licenses, but failed to get in in three.

The affected universities are Wesley University of Science and Technology, Landmark University, Rhema University, Samuel Adegboyega University, Paul University, Oduduwa University, Tansian University, Baze University, Obong University, Achievers University and Wellspring University.

Mr. Okojie, who did not mention any punitive measure for the affected universities, explained that the provisional license was intended to create room for effective mentoring and qualitative growth within the first three years of operation of a new private university.

He noted that the universities were also to be monitored by NUC to ensure that they comply with the original purpose of establishment.

“That was also part of NUC’s initiative for early warning signals to detect compromises in quality for the application of corrective and remedial measures to redress such situations,” he said.

He added that the commission monitors the activities of universities in the country, and inspects and penalises them through the accreditation process.

“If we don’t monitor them now they will have problems. So they will slow down on programmes, (we) look at their staff strength and look at their programmes,” he said.

Also speaking, the Vice chancellor of Caleb University,  Ayodeji Olukoju, said private universities are the way forward for tertiary education in the country.

He said since interim licenses were given, the institutions had focused on academic programme development, system development and infrastructural development.

The nine universities that received full operational licenses are Veritas University, Caleb University, Geofery Okoye University, Fountain University, Adeleke University, Western Delta University, Afe Babalola University, Salem University and Nigerian Turkish Nile University.

UNILAG Rapist Lecturer: Another Victim Tells Her Story

An alleged victim of a part time lecturer, Akinfolarin Baruwa, who raped an admission seeker at UNILAG has surfaced.

Here's her story:

I had finished my project with my supervisor a pleasant middle aged woman but because she retired before I could get time off work to have her sign off my score sheet I had been re-assigned to Mr Akinfolarin Baruwa as my new project supervisor.

My first impression about him was he was a no nonsense kinda lecturer. I walked into the office he was at the bus admin complex top floor he seemed to be sharing an office with another lecturer.

It was about 5pm I had a paper that day. He didn’t attend to me till the other man was done, he sent me on silly errands like “make this photocopy”, “go and buy me tom tom” all this continued till about 8pm after waiting for like forever he attended to me, glanced at my work and said it was rubbish and couldn’t believe my former supervisor who happened to be a professor could approve such nonsense I appealed to him that it was exam period I couldn’t possibly work on my project from the scratch and still meet the deadline for submission so I begged him to let me make corrections instead.

He said someone has done the same topic 2/3 years back and he would easily report me to the authorities that I copied which would guarantee I’ve an extra year. He went on and on ,he had me believe the work was so bad assuring me that I couldn’t escape an extra year he even said he would report me for plagiarism because I forgot to site a particular reference. At some point he said I shouldn’t bother with correcting the work that he’s submitting my name to Admin with the batch of students to be carried over next year, I was stoned.

After begging him over and over to make me correct [mostly typographical errors] he finally agreed, my mind was finally at rest and I thanked him, as I made to leave he looked at me and was like ‘is that how to say thank you?’ I then went on both knees thanking him profusely “thank you sir”, “God bless you sir”…. While I was at it he was closing the blinds of the office and he turned off the A/C [the office was very cold] like he was going to wrap up for the day, he was clearing the sofa that had other peoples projects next thing I know he locks the door…

I was stilling trying to wrap my head around him locking the door when he dragged me; Stella I was a size 12 5”4 then, I am big, this guy is strong ,he just grabbed my boobs and my arms to his manhood rubbing it, next thing He was forcefully trying to remove my clothes, when I tried to force myself off his grip he got more aggressive when I tried to scream he got even more aggressive.

That place is isolated and quiet at night [the office is opposite UNILAG guesthouse by the sea side] I figured screaming was a waste of time and being forceful wasn’t getting anywhere so I lay still begging, then I began to cry “I’m asthmatic I can’t breathe” so I pretended to have an attack then he stopped he started apologising he said it was a mistake and he’s usually not like that and he’s sorry then he started again apologising that he’s hard, okay he doesn’t want sex again that I should just give him a hand job, I said I needed air that he should please open the door [acting like I was about to faint], he then finally opened the door apologising, I rushed out and I was still acting like I was short of breath and fainting with plenty tears in my eyes.

He later called me apologising that he doesn’t know what got over him, it was a mistake etc. I told my best friend, i was in complete shock ,all my years in UNILAG I had never experienced such, i was so stunned that day i lost my bag.

On another occasion I had to have him sign my score sheet and i thought to my that this was broad daylight and what could possibly happen?

A lecture was going on the floor before and the noise from the mega phone clouded the office and this man started again. I was furious and I started to insult him when he was trying to pin me down and as we were dragging my shirt tore and as I was shouting he pushed me.

I stormed out and he was shouting “get out of my office”, ”you can’t graduate i promise you”.

This time I had had it and I was going to the authorities, when I got downstairs I met a friend who happened to be a staff and he saw how mad I was and I narrated all that had happened.

If you see the way this man painted me black, he denied what happened he almost denied knowing me sef in fact he was mumbling my name like we had just met 5min ago. “He said you know how these students can get” the way he turned the story around I know deep down they knew he was lying but they had to be diplomatic they asked me to do my corrections and forget the matter.

Baruwa then started stalking me.

This man frustrated me because it was a finished project before I was assigned to him, he made me redo and retype, photocopy, bind about 3 times over and every given time he says “you just like punishing yourself” with a snare.

It was one thing for a lecturer to ask a student out, it was a different thing entirely to manipulate me into sleeping with you and physically and emotionally harassing me in the process.

When he saw I was adamant he held on to my score sheetwithout which I couldn’t submit my project or do my defence. He was eager to break me but when I had had enough I reported to the authorities and at that point I was introduced to another girl by my class governor who had complained about this same Baruwa man.

I’ve attached a copy of the handwritten letter I submitted to the authorities and I had to keep it short and brief. The other girls he sexually harassed [my roommate and the other girl] didn’t show up on the day of the report and my class governor didn’t want to have anything to do with the case too so i flew solo.

I guess everybody was afraid of the consequences of reporting a lecturer.

The school promised to look into the matter but I think because of lack of concrete evidence or other witnesses the best they could do was stop him from supervising student’s projects.

Why I raped my friend’s teenage daughter – UNILAG lecturer

A part-time lecturer, Afeez Baruwa, has been arrested for allegedly raping an 18-year-old admission seeker, Caroline (pseudonym) at the University of Lagos, Akoka.

Unilag Lecturer

He tells his part of the story below:

“It is true that I took her to YABATECH and showed her places. What is not true is that I deliberately took off from home because of any plan to do anything bad to her. I took off from home that early to avoid traffic.

“When she was in my office, she was the one telling me to be free with her. I realised that I needed to lie down a little and did not want my shirt to be rumpled. When I pulled it off, she even told me not to mind her presence that since it was my office, I could do whatever I wanted.

“When we first got to the office, she lay on my chest and was even playing with my manhood. That was why I could not resist it. After we came back from seeing the woman who was supposed to help with her admission, she was about to go when I told her to give me a hug. It was that which now led to the actual sexual encounter.

“When I realised that I could not resist her, I had to tell her to let me put on a condom. The truth is that, while I was putting on a condom, she stood by and waited. I did not actually penetrate. When she was saying ‘it’s enough, it’s enough’ and complaining that her tummy had started hurting her, I stopped.”

Baruwa explained that Shola’s father had sent a cryptic text message to him (days later when he learnt of what happened to his daughter), saying that he had learnt of what he did to his daughter.

“I know I betrayed his trust but nobody would understand it was consensual. I would have reached out to him to beg him if I think it would solve the problem,” he said.

Two days later, he was arrested by the Nigerian police.
