Student of Nigerian Colleges of Education to get one laptop Each - Buhari

Student teachers have urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to digitalize the learning process in Nigerian Colleges of Education.

In an open letter published on Monday, the National Association of Nigerian Colleges of Education Student (NANCES), appealed to the Federal Government to introduce information communication technologies (ICT) in the system as is being done by the Osun State government in itsOpon Imo initiative.

According to a The Nation report, NANCES said the computerization of education should start with teachers who are being trained at the colleges of education to help the country "catch up with the rest of the world."

“If NCE education is digitalized, the primary education, which is the foundation of our education system, would have been solidly built and the menace of falling standard of education will gradually go into oblivion," the group stated.

“The federal government should make it as a policy to mandate each student of the Nigerian Colleges of Education to get one laptop/tablet, which must be specially designed and customized for teachers’ education."

They suggested that the laptops could be subsidized by the government and issued to the students who will pay back over a period of three years.

“We are now appealing to the government to be ready to subsidize the computers to make it affordable for financially incapacitated students.”

The Osun State government through its Opon Imo project issued about 150,000 units of e-learning tablets to students of Senior Secondary Schools.

Each of the tablets had 63 e-textbooks (56 core texts and seven extra-curricular texts) tailored to the Nigerian curriculum, with lesson notes and 40,000 past questions for 17 subjects tested in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE).
